Bigger Bags

A member at my church named Pat used to volunteer at our ministry at Jere Whitson Elementary School. She once told me a story about her experience there. One year at Christmas, she gave the students she tutored a bag of goodies, including candy and pencils and other cool stuff children enjoy. After Christmas break, one of her students came up to her and asked a question. He said, “Miss Pat, are you going to make a bag for us on Valentine’s Day like you did for Christmas?” Pat said, “I might be able to do that.” Then she asked, “What did you like about the Christmas bag?” The child said, “I really liked the Snickers candy bar and the gum.” Pat said, “What would you like me to do if I put together a Valentine’s Day bag?” The child thought about it, smiled, and then said, “I’d like for you to get bigger bags.”

I think God would be pleased with that challenge. There is a world of need out there, both in our community and around the world. Both as churches and individual Christians, we need to make bigger bags.
